LEGBA KALFOU

Other names for Legba: Legba Atibon, Legba Donpèd, Legba Evyesou, Legba Keke, Legba Zandó, Papa Legba.

Attributes: guardian of keys, roads, corners, and doorways; protector of homes.

Main rites: Kongo, Nago, and particularly Petro.

All Legbas share many similar characteristics, but Kalfou, invoked as Lwa Petro, unlike the old Atibon Rada, appears as a young and vigorous man. His theomorphosis can be violent. Despite being severe, he recognizes the weakness of the human condition and helps his followers face the hardships of life. Since his name, Kalfou, means “crossroads” in Creole, it is not surprising that his ceremonies usually take place in the middle of crossroads. In the center of his Vévé, there is an intersection of avenues. While Atibon controls the sunlight, Kalfou, who likes to joke with mischievous spirits, prefers the darkness of night and moonlight, his symbol.
